Structured Wiring

What in the world is "Structured Wiring"? It is a term used to describe the installation practice of installing a planned wiring method by which all services (phone, data, television, music, and security) originate from a central location or hub.

Why does it matter to me as a home owner or business owner if I have a "structured wiring" plan or not?

A well designed structured wiring plan allows you to upgrade or change your technology systems to accommodate future needs. A great example of this is when Cat5e wire is used to initially run a phone signal to a location in your home. The same Cat5e wire can be switched over to carry a computer network signal, a security camera signal, an HDTV signal, a digital music signal, or many other signals. In effect, installing that one cable can save you a lot of money and headaches down the road.

But who cares about a wire... isn't everything going "wireless" anyway?

Wireless technology is certainly improving. But how many times have you had a dropped cell phone call? Even by spending billions on wireless cell phone technology and coverage areas, cell phone calls still lack reliability at times. Your home is similar; it is very difficult to guarantee wireless reliability and consistency throughout a home. It costs very little to put extra wiring in your home or business during the construction or remodeling phase. It costs significantly more to come back and try to add wires after the walls are up.

The current "industry standard" is to run (2) two Cat5e and (2) two RG6 Coaxial cables to each "media outlet" location. A little planning from a CEDIA Certified Installation specialist will go a long way to helping you make your plans. Give us a call, we'd be happy to install your wiring or help you come up with a plan.
